Angelika Film Center

The Angelika Film Center remains one of downtown Houston’s greatest gems. Conveniently located in Bayou City Center on Smith Street it is within walking distance from businesses in the “Skyline District” and downtown Houston hotels. Ample and well lit parking is available in the Theater District parking garage system. Valet parking is also available. The added bonus for patrons of Angelika Film Center is the reimbursement of the parking charge. Save your parking receipt and the box office will refund the cost of parking. (Be sure to hang on to it as some exits require the receipt) All screens at Angelika feature the same stadium seating and high-end sound systems you find in other Houston megaplexes. At one time Angelika featured a cafe and bar in their lobby, but this is no longer the case. At one time coffee and other beverages could be brought into the theater for further enjoyment.

Angelika features a broad variety of movies with an emphasis on independent and foreign films. However Angelika is different than most foreign film theaters in that it also will select major motion pictures at its locations. On my most recent visit to see the movie Crash, I was surprised to see that Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith was also playing. An even greater shocker was that this was opening weekend and Revenge of the Sith was not sold out. One thing I want to point out is that Angelika is an adult theater. What I mean by this is that if you are tired of watching a movie filled with cell phone conversations, giggling teens, and the makings of domestic violence incidents then Angelika may be your cup of tea. Because of the large roster of independent and foreign films, Angelika's patrons tend to be a bit more mature. This may be the reason I found the latest Star Wars to still have available seats. With this in mind it can be said that the Angelika Film Center is also downtown Houston's best kept secret. Hopefully the addition of residents inhabiting downtown will result in Angelika's discovery.
